PHONE-BAR
This video project, inspired by a real-life story of an 8-year-old child, offers a glimpse into his inner world—his thoughts, habits, and perspective on money.
Filmed in South Tyrol, a region where traditional values around saving still shape everyday life, the work reflects how local customs are passed down through generations. In this community, where many families come from farming backgrounds, children are introduced to financial responsibility from a very young age. It’s common for kids to open their first bank account at the age of 4 or 5, guided by their teachers, and to regularly visit the bank with their classmates to deposit savings.
The child in this video takes these values to the extreme—obsessively collecting money, even going so far as to steal coins from a public fountain. But his behavior is not just about hoarding. He also makes careful, strategic choices, always looking for a “good deal” before spending anything.
The piece explores how deeply cultural narratives about money can shape a child’s behavior—sometimes in humorous, sometimes in unsettling ways. It’s a reflection on the ways systems of value are learned early, and how they play out through small, everyday rituals.
