Open online Archive and public Engagement printed pictures

2022

In September 2022, I joined a 10-day site-specific research project in the gentrified neighborhood of Bouwlust en Vrederust, The Hague.
The project centered on direct interaction with residents through fieldwork, dialogue, and presence. I’m especially grateful to artists Ruben Abels and Iris Vetter for their guidance and insights throughout the entire project.
This project represents the final phase of my work in Den Haag following TOON: 2, a performative intervention in the neighborhood. After that, my approach shifted to a more protective stance. I began photographing the area extensively, capturing familiar places from various angles. These images became the foundation for an open online archive, accessible to anyone, anywhere.

To reintroduce the work into the neighborhood, I created a one-square-meter QR code linked to the archive, carried as a mobile protest banner. I also set up a small corner table in a lively local spot, where I displayed printed versions of the photographs under a bilingual sign: “Take me, I’m yours” (in both English and Dutch). People were free to take the prints, just as they could download the images online.

The interaction that followed was deeply rewarding: young people engaged with the QR code, scanning and exploring the digital archive, while older residents stopped by the table, recognizing locations and sharing stories. These spontaneous conversations became a key part of the work—bridging generations and offering a moment of shared reflection. This final chapter of the project was not only about documentation, but about creating space for connection, memory, and dialogue.

The archive was originally hosted on Wix, but due to the company’s ties to the ongoing genocide in Palestine, I made the decision to remove it from their platform. The archive will now remain permanently on my current website.
