In early 2022, I received the devastating news that one of my closest friends had passed away. We shared a deep bond — we studied together, spent countless hours side by side, and she inspired me artistically in ways I’ll always be grateful for. She was an extraordinary talented artist. Her loss shook me to the core, and for a long time, I struggled to find a way forward.

Eventually, I began to process my grief through a video piece titled Menghtine. The title reflects the surreal, liminal state I found myself in — a kind of emotional limbo where time lost meaning, and I longed to remain in a dreamlike reality where her death wasn’t true. The video itself is chaotic yet interspersed with moments of life and joy. It holds both simplicity and visual poetry, fragility and repetition, alienation and beauty.

Her Chinese name derived from the word “夢” “dream,” and that resonates deeply in this work — it became both a title and a feeling I tried to hold on to.

To honor the depth of this experience, I designed a small, tent-like space around the work — a safe, intimate environment where viewers can sit, take their time, and feel without judgment.

This work was later presented at the “Re-current” exhibition at NP3 in Groningen. I later created also another piece dedicated to her memory shown during my graduation exhibition again at NP3.
