A collaborative, community-rooted art project that culminated in a two-city exhibition tour
first in Berlin at Kühlhaus and then in Bolzano at Kleine Galerie - Piccola Galleria.
2020–2022
L’abito non fa il Monaco (2022) is a series of large-scale acrylic works on paper, using my body as a silhouette to explore layered aspects of identity. The project features three figures—Südtiroler Mina, Berber Amazigh Mina, and Middle Stereotypical Mina—each representing a facet of self, with more to come as my experiences evolve.
Like Lezione di Nuoto and Antillia, this work explores identity, memory, and visibility—but turns inward, toward embodiment and cultural complexity, navigating the tension between imposed narratives and self-definition.
Südtiroler Mina wears Lederhosen, playfully critiquing the gender norms and binaries of my South Tyrolean roots. Berber Amazigh Mina appears in translucent Amazigh dress, reflecting both pride in and distance from my Moroccan heritage. Middle Stereotypical Mina wears my everyday clothes—unperformed, lived-in and self-owned.
Each figure’s background complements their outfit, but the skin tone—closely matching my own—is central. As a child, I was told to use Fleischfarbe (“flesh color”) that didn’t resemble me. This series reclaims that space, embracing visibility on my own terms.
L’abito non fa il Monaco is not just about clothing—it’s a claim to presence, a refusal to be reduced, and a call to look beyond appearances without ignoring their impact.
